The rainbow is a symbol of hope, pride, and diversity. A rainbow results from the passage and transformation of light through rain. Clear light rays from the sun pass through raindrops and leave, spreading out over a wide range of angles resulting in a spectrum of light in the shape of a bow.
The tree is a symbol of nurturing and growth. Within every acorn is the potential to become a glorious oak tree. Yet, the tree’s growth depends on the conditions in the environment and the history of the earth it is rooted in. At the deepest level, the tree is grounded in shared values, such as respect, kindness, equity, community, unity, and peace.
The rainbow and the tree relate to my work, which is focused on understanding mental health and social problems facing LGBTQ youth and developing interventions that are effective in transforming individuals, organizations, and institutions so that everyone in our society, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, can develop their potentials and lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
